HOW THE SONG CAME TO BE

In the days of radio only, before TV, CD’s and the more modern music and video conveyances, Irving Berlin was writing songs for radio,  broadway shows and movies.  Be aware that composers can write songs which lay unpublished, sometimes until their death.  A popular, well-known singer, Kate Smith, was filling the airwaves with songs about love, but what many did not know is her dedication to patriotism and America.

It was 1938, before my time, when war was threatening in Europe and Russia and times were hard for the people of America.  Patriotism was at a low.  Kate was immensely concerned about the attitudes of the depressed American people.  Of course, she had the reach to do something about it and that’s exactly what she did!

THE BIRTH OF A SONG

Kate contacted Irving requesting him to compose a song which would raise the patriotic spirits of the American people.  Irving went into his archives and pulled out “God Bless America“, written around 1917.  Both decided they would take no money for the performance of the song.

Kate practiced with her radio studio orchestra and on November 10, 1938, she premiered  the song to her radio studio audience and the country.  The date of the presentation later was declared Veterans Day.  The anthem became so popular that it is now a patriotic standard, played and sung at military, religious and sports events.

SUBSEQUENT EVENTS

In 1943, former President, Ronald Regan had the starring role in This Is The Army  movie which featured “God Bless America” as the background music.

The Boy Scouts are still benefiting from the donated royalties from this great music.

VALUE FOR COUNTRY

Kate Smith and Irving Berlin were a historical team creating something of value for the United States of America.  The best part is they were not politicians but possessed a true love of country.  How many Americans can claim their love of country to be true and charitable?   Could our modern day composers and entertainers create an equal value for the U.S.A. ?

Hope That God Blesses America

My 2015 wish is for all Americans to return to the patriotic values of the 1930’s and 1940’s and that God truly continues to Bless America !
