Rarely, has Mozart’s Overture to “The Marriage of Figaro” aroused symphony goers to leave their seats for a standing ovation, but it is a surefire bet, a conductor never, ever convinced ticketholders to listen carefully enough to fortissimo passages to cause them to leap from their seats at the recurring, accented, loud, three-note motifs.

It is absolutely unimaginable that a maestro could require his esteemed patrons to startle their neighbour with a well-timed “BOO” or neck throttle during the “sneaky bits” of Don Giovanni. This was true until Okanagan Symphony Guest Conductor Michael Corridor took up the baton for the 2005 Educational School Concert Sequence.

Corridor set up, by far, one of the most entertaining OSO performances this music lover has observed in a very prolonged time.  I spent a considerable portion turned to the admiring squealing faces of delight behind me as opposed to fixated on the my normal level of focus, the first violins.  Corridor’s rapport with all the young children was great, his enthusiasm for music was catching, and the little ones cherished him.

Andre Rieu Tickets. He didn’t resort to gross potty humour or undesirable music puns to win the youngsters over, nor did he dumb down the genius of Mozart’s music.  The truth is, all people left the concert that day with music terms, for instance, “motif, thematic development” and “cadenza” below their belts.  Corridor taught the young children to interact together with the orchestra and express emotion and imagination as little ones can.

“Mozart around the Move” featured choices from Mozart’s Symphonies 29 and 40, two overtures plus the notorious “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”.  Kelowna teen prodigy, Melissa Wilmot, astonished us with her dazzling virtuoso taking part in the Violin Concerto in G and young members of the audience played percussion onstage through the “Toy Symphony” composed Mozart’s dad, Leopold.

At a single level, my four-year-old took off walking down the aisle and I was mortified.  An OSO manager gently reminded me, it was a kid’s concert and that my son was undertaking what came naturally to him.  The concert allowed me to benefit from the world’s most lovely music and my son to burn up off the Timbits he had at lunch.

A year ago,I was quite excited due to the fact Natalie MacMaster stepped onto the Salmon Arm Neighborhood Centre’s stage.  Funny, I’m a classical violinist who’s “first love” is Beethoven, but the shows, I’ve enjoyed most, featured a fiddle-diva and an a la rock band and hundreds of giggling, gyrating young children.

Each occasion wasn’t even part of the OSO’s major concert series and were not carried out by Douglas Sanford.  The concerts have been just the small nuggets that keep the OSO afloat coupled with monthly exhibits, however, these concerts have been the most important to me.

All sound cards have outputs for speakers or headphones.  Most cards will have additional ports for other external components such as surround sound, MIDI devices, microphones, and other miscellaneous input devices.  The ‘Line-In’ port is where we will be focusing our discussion.  You will want to make sure that the card has one or more LINE IN ports capable of capturing the left and right stereo signals independently.  The device driver for the card should let your recording software adjust the input levels of the left and right channels independently.  It’s OK if there is only one physical port as long as it can separate the signals from a stereo jack.  Don’t make the mistake of using the microphone port as a line in port even if your jack fits into it properly.  Microphone jacks are for 8-bit mono (not stereo) recordings which is not good for music applications.

The word length of the line-in port determines how much information is stored in a single slice of digital sound information.  Most PC sound cards support a 16-bit depth which is the standard for today’s CD recordings.  16-bits covers the full spectrum of frequencies that the human ear can hear, but for a true music lover, it is not enough to pick up just those frequencies.  We want all of the sound that was available on the original analog recording.  The frequencies that are omitted from 16-bit recordings are the reason that most artists are moving back to analog recording.  It is those lost frequencies that contribute to harmonics and over-tones which give the music its depth.  Just beware, because most PC sound cards that advertise 24-bit sound is strictly for the play-back feature.  Insure that the sound card you are going to use for vinyl capturing supports a 24-bit depth for LINE-IN recording.

The sample rate determines how many slices of sound data are captured per second.  A standard music CD supports sample rates of 44,100 or 48,000.  A regular CD player is not capable of handling a higher sample rate.  The data storage capacity of a standard compact disc would prohibit you from storing an entire LP at a higher sample rate.  Why consider recording at a higher quality than your current players can hande??  Because the technology is evolving.  An example of this is the Super Audio CDs which store 10 times more than standard CDs and support a much higher sample rate.!!!  The bottom line is that the audiophile will want to record and store as close to the original sound as possible so that nothing will be lost when the technology catches up.  Until then, you can use your source file to create playback files at lower bit-rates/bit depths that are supported by current playback equipment.  PC Sound cards are available that support bit rates of up to 192K.

Pregnancy, Labor and Delivery

Research shows that the brain reacts in a positive way to soothing sounds.  Since babies develop their brains while still in the womb, it makes sense to try to introduce them early to relaxing sounds.  Pregnant women can do this by putting earphones on their bellies or just playing music while sitting in a room.

Expectant mothers aren’t the only ones who can put calming music to good use. Those, who are actually already in labor or who are about to deliver, can also benefit from relaxing tunes.  Labor pains and the actual stress of pushing a baby out can be eased by playing slow, soothing sounds.

Infant Care

Babies truly are bundles of joy but sometimes it can get frustrating trying to figure out what they want.  If they cry continuously and they aren’t hungry, wet or warm they might just be generally uncomfortable without any specific reason. How does your memory benefit from playing an instrument?  What benefits do you think you derive as you continue honing and developing finger and brain skills?  The human brain receives, actually, an excellent workout when playing an instrument.  We have normally a high regard for accomplished musicians and consider them to have a high intellect because they have been labeled “musically-skilled individuals.”

Most of these performers are known to have natural talent and can detect different pitches and notes.  They have the special ability to memorize the music by simply listening and then playing its notes.  This is a myth because, chances are, they have studied music for many years.  Therefore, playing an instrument employs your learned and practiced skills through the application of detecting, memorizing, and applying the notes, pitches and rhythm you hear. Your brain is constantly working and benefiting as you play any instrument.

Your mind is also busy doing the computations as you tickle those ivories or strings.  Why computations, you might be wondering?  It is because playing music takes mathematical skills in theory.  All music is written in mathematical terms so your brain must process the mathematical signals of the notes and rhythm of the written music as you play a specific piece of music.

The left part of the human brain is said to be the processor of the mathematical elements. From the notes that you are working on when you are pressing those ivories or strings with your fingers, you are also trying to solve a mathematical problem.

Therefore, in the same manner that your body needs nutritious foods and physical workouts to be in excellent condition, you also need the intellectual workouts for your brain.  Playing a musical instrument is just one of the ways to exercise your brain.

Another benefit of playing a musical instrument is that you develop motor coordination.  Hand and eye coordination tend to develop to ultimate levels and the brain develops the signals to allow the coordination.  The brain signals include which keys or strings to play and allows your ears to determine if the chord sounded by the hands is pleasurable to hear.  The brain sends signals to all of your fingers in this process.

Playing music can lessen, or eliminate, the stress you may have as a result of just living. As you attempt to play and hear the music, you have entered into another dimension whose world is nothing but peaceful and serene. Playing a musical instrument often entails uninteresting tasks such as playing scales that can become boring. Scales are a necessary evil, if you will and if applied properly can be a path to better playing, no matter the instrument. If you can remember why you are playing scales you can receive the best result from their use.

How Do Scales Help?

Scales are helpful for the improvement of technique in your playing, being it guitar or piano. Scales help you to perform more challenging pieces. You will understand music theory more when you grasp scales, they go hand in hand. Jazz players will attest to the importance of scales to playing jazz music. To be unfamiliar with scales is to not be able to read the road map of music, especially in jazz.

Scales must be a part of every serious practice in order to make them second nature. One of the benefits of scales is to warm up your fingers before you begin playing.

Tips for Practice With Scales

It is important to start with a scale that is easy for you. Remember to not push too hard at first. A short run, say a triad or even less is a good place to warm up before you move to a full octave or even more. Move your starting point up a half step at a time until you have moved up an octave. Next you will repeat the process with a different scale, say a minor one instead of a major one.

The patterns you learn as you play scales will become part of your permanent muscle memory. As you progress you will be able to play one scale after another as you move up and down. Your technique as you play scales is vitally important. Scales practice is often dreaded and feared by all musicians until you understand what it will do for you.
